Akure Explosion: I Didn't Know There're Explosives In My Truck, Truck Driver

Four days after the explosion which occurred in Ondo State, the driver of the truck that conveyed the explosives, Mr Isiaka Yinusa, said he did not know that his vehicle carried explosive devices. The explosion occurred on Akure-Owo Expressway, at Ilu Abo town in the Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State in the early hour of Saturday, injuring several people and destroying no fewer than 70 buildings in the community. Yinusa, together with some other people were injured in the accident and were rushed to the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital, Akure, the state capital, where he had since been receiving treatment. Speaking on his hospital bed, the victim said he was hired to take a consignment to Auchi, Edo State, after the vehicle that was bringing the consignment from Ibadan became faulty in Osu, Osun State. COVID-19: Osinbajo, Governors Meet To Consider More Palliatives

ABUJA—VICE President Yemi Osinbajo and governors who are members of the National Economic Council, NEC, yesterday met to discuss on more palliatives to cushion the effect of Covid-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic. The Special NEC committee, which was held via videoconference anchored from the Presidential Villa, urged members to increase public enlightment because of the ravaging COVID-19. The Committee received the report of its Technical Working Group, which proposed an array of policy options and recommendations on how federal, state and local governments could bring relief to the people and take other adequate measures in containing and responding to the adverse economic effects of the pandemic. Coronavirus: Germany To Donate N2.2 Billion To Nigeria

The German Mission in Nigeria has pledged €5.5m to the Nigeria Humanitarian Fund, says the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Nigeria, The PUNCH reports. The donation, according to an online currency converter, Oanda, as of 2pm on Thursday, exchanged for N2.2bn. This is coming as the West-African country grapples with the attendant effects of economic shocks as a result of the coronavirus pandemic which has paralysed most activities in the country while infecting over 170 people with two deaths. The PUNCH reports that the Federal Government’s 14-day lockdown is on in top cities including Abuja and Lagos as part of efforts to curb the community transmission of the pandemic. Alhaji Aliko Dangote has donated a 600 bed isolation centre to the Kano State Government. The isolation centre is being set up at the Sani Abacha Stadium. This was made known by the special assistant to the Kano State governor on new media, Salihu Tanko Yakasai (@Dawisu). Buhari, Osinbajo Earning Half Salaries Since 2015 - Femi Adesina

A spokesman for the Nigerian Government Femi Adesina has said President Muhammadu Buhari and vice president Yemi Osinbajo have been earning only 50% of their salaries since they were sworn in for their first term in office in 2015. Nigeria is battling the outbreak of coronavirus which has infected over 830, 000 and killed more than 41,000 persons worldwide. In support of curbing the spread of the virus in Nigeria, politicians, philanthropists, companies have announced donations to the Nigerian Government. Ministers in the government last week said they were donating 50% of their March salaries to curb the global pandemic. The Federal Government on Wednesday parried a question on the whereabouts and the health status of the Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari, Abba Kyari, who tested positive for coronavirus. Kyari had, in a letter he wrote to the public on Sunday, confirmed that he tested positive for coronavirus last week and would be in Lagos on Monday for further tests based on medical advice. The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, had on Tuesday said contrary to reports that Kyari was at the Mainland Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH) isolation centre in Lagos, he did not know his whereabouts in the state.
